Aris RPG Rules
& Gameplay Guidelines

Rule 0: Mission Statement

The mission statement of Aris RPG is:

“Keep the game friendly and welcoming to as wide a range of gamers as possible.”

This principle guides all moderation. If the letter of the rules conflicts with the mission statement, the mission statement takes priority. Moderators may engage in moderation beyond the written rules when necessary to ensure a friendly and welcoming game environment. Adherence to the letter of the rules or “being right” does not excuse destructive participation.

General Conduct & Moderation Rules

Rule 1: Community Conduct

  • Do not disrupt the game or its mission (see Rule 0).
  • Examples of unacceptable behavior:
    • Trolling, personal attacks, or harassment
    • Engaging in revenge fantasies or inflammatory discussions
    • “Just Asking Questions” (JAQing off) to provoke conflict
    • Threatening legal action against the game or other users
    • Hate speech will not be tolerated. This includes racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or ableist content.
  • Zero tolerance for hate groups. Support of groups like Gamergate, racial supremacist movements, redpill/incel ideology, or any other hate group will result in a permanent ban.
  • If you see a problematic post, report it instead of responding. To report a post:
    1. Right-click on the post.
    2. Choose Apps > Report Message.
    3. A moderator will follow up if necessary.

Rule 2: Posting Guidelines

  • Your posts should contribute to the discussion in the appropriate channel.
  • Do not make empty posts (e.g., “lol,” “cool”). Original posts (OPs) must set up a discussion or roleplay.
  • Explicit sexual content or pornography is prohibited. Violators will be permanently banned.

Rule 3: Legal Compliance

  • Do not post or encourage any content that is illegal under U.S. law or the laws of your country of residence.

Rule 4: Privacy Protection

  • Respect the privacy of fellow players.
  • Do not post personal information about others without their explicit written permission.
  • Do not use posts for commercial purposes without express permission.
  • Doxxing is grounds for immediate permanent ban.

Rule 5: Account Responsibility

  • Do not share your account; you are responsible for all posts made by your account.
  • Sockpuppets (multiple accounts by the same user) require moderator permission.
  • Ban evasion will result in a permanent ban. Contact SJ to appeal instead.

Rule 6: No Professional or Crisis Advice

  • Do not ask for or offer medical, legal, or other professional advice.
  • Do not request emergency crisis counseling or personal financial donations.
  • Ask yourself: “If the advice given here is bad, could someone be harmed?” If yes, do not post it.

Final Notes

  • If you have questions about any rules, contact a moderator or GM (SJ).
  • Rules are subject to updates as the game evolves.
  • Most importantly: Respect your fellow players and have fun!

On the Table

  • Incorporating a rule set via bot, primarily for trade, PvP, map movement, and combat.

Gameplay Rules: Scenes & Time Progression

1. Scenes & Time Advancement

  • Aris RPG uses scene-based time progression rather than strict real-time advancement.
  • Time moves forward when major events conclude or at GM discretion (weekly/bi-weekly). Generally speaking, players should not feel rushed nor should the scene come to a stall because no one’s posted in four days.
  • If a scene is not finished before a time advance, players may complete it as a flashback.
  • Flashback posts must be clearly marked (e.g., [Flashback: Black Sands Camp - Before the Storm]).
  • Soft Lock: Players can finish a scene after time moves forward via flashbacks.
  • Hard Lock: When time moves forward without exception, all unfinished scenes must be summarized or considered resolved.

2. Global Events & Synchronization

  • Some events affect all characters (e.g., storms, invasions, major world shifts).
  • When a global event occurs:
    • The GM will announce the event in #⚡┃global and relevant channels.
    • All characters must acknowledge the event in their ongoing scenes.
    • Flashbacks may be used for minor, personal interactions as long as they do not contradict current events.
  • Players cannot ignore or override global events in their roleplay.

3. Traveling Between Locations & Time Rules

Characters traveling between locations must follow time synchronization rules.

> A full map of the entire region will be posted, as well as travel times between those locations. It will come after the adoption of the final set of these rules.

  • Short Distance (under an hour) → Post departure, enter the new channel immediately.
  • Moderate Distance (a few hours to a day) → Post departure in former channel, and allow yourself “travel time” before posting in the new location. This is done by describing, upon arrival in the new channel, any change in character appearance and physical condition.
  • Long Distance (multiple days) → GM determines if travel is summarized or played out.
    • If an event happens during travel, the character is locked in that scene until resolved.
    • If a character arrives in a new zone after a time jump, they must sync with the current in-game time.

4. Post Length & Content Expectations

  • Posts should include what others can see and hear from your character.
  • Avoid overly short posts (e.g., single-sentence replies) unless appropriate for pacing.
  • Avoid lengthy posts that involve your characters inner desires and thoughts. While wonderful, other PCs may not have a way to know of this.
  • Describe actions clearly to ensure other players can interact meaningfully.
  • If dialogue is involved, specify tone, body language, or intent where relevant.

5. PvP Rules (Consent-Only Combat & Conflict)

  • All player-versus-player (PvP) actions require mutual consent.
  • Before engaging in PvP (combat, theft, deception, etc.), both players must agree on the conflict.
  • Disputes are resolved in one of two ways:
    1. Agreed-upon resolution: Players discuss and determine the outcome in private.
    2. GM arbitration: If no agreement is reached, a GM will step in to mediate.
  • PvP actions that force unwanted outcomes on another player are not allowed.

6. Handling Player Absences

  • If a player is inactive and time advances, their character is assumed to be occupied with mundane tasks.
  • If a major event occurs (e.g., an attack, evacuation), the GM may move the character to a neutral safe point unless the player provides alternate instructions.
